I need Moveable Type install help, anyone?

                        

HELP NEEDED!

I have been attempting to get Moveable Type installed, up and running and not having any luck at all. I have everything installed on the server, checked and double checked, but still get an error when I attempt to log in with http://mywebsite/mt/mt.cgi. The error reads:

Got an error: C:\Accounts\mysite\wwwRoot\mt\mt.cfg:20: variable 'The' not defined

I've double checked all the troubleshooting suggestions in the MT knowledge base ... mt.cfg uploaded in ASCII, no open comment lines in the mt.cfg file, paths typed correctly, etc.

I've reached my technical limit and I need some help. Pretty please!

Firefox vs. Internet Explorer 6

Hmmm. I made a discovery this afternoon.

I downloaded Firefox for the 2nd time last week. I can't remember now why I didn't like it the first time. After loading Firefox, I had to make some changes on the blog in order to get things to show up properly. These were very minor changes. However, this afternoon, I was having trouble with a cut and paste operation within Firefox and got frustrated, so I loaded I/E-6 in order to complete the process. That is when I made the discovery that in the left sidebar, for the GOP News Feed, it is blank in IE6. The header and footer are there, but no feed. When I switch back to Firefox, the feed appears the way it is supposed to. So, then I loaded the script language on another web site I have and it appeared just fine again.

Does anyone know why this particular feed would not show up in IE and does show up in Firefox? It worked fine in IE last week before I downloaded Firefox.

As to what I think of Firefox ... I find it a bit unwieldy and not as user friendly as IE. The tabs are nice, but some of the other features that are available with a single click or a drag and click in IE, take several extra steps in Firefox.

For those of you using IE, we apologize if you too are getting a blank white column in the GOP News Feed.

Government vs. Google

I'm with Google on this one. The Government needs to narrow its search warrant. Asking for random records over a prescribed time period is way too broad. I would be more inclined to back the Government if the warrant specified only records where a Google search for child porn was involved.

The move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child protection law struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to minors. The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches.

In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for one million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period.

World's Fastest Computer Gets Even Faster

The computer, named Blue Gene/L, which operates at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, has doubled its performance to 280.6 trillion calculations a second (teraflops), up from 136.8 teraflops from the list released in June. The system, which is used to study the United States nuclear stockpile and perform other research, was officially completed this summer after it was doubled in size. My other life is my genealogy hobby. In a tip from the Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter, I learned about this nifty service. For  genealogy researchers who might find themselves looking at documents at the kitchen table of a contact they've tracked down during a research foray, being able to make an instant copy can really come in handy.

There are probably many professions where a service like this would be valuable. Check it out here.

Moveable Type Blog Conversion - yes? no?

This is an open question to anyone who might want to give advice or add their two cents.

I am considering redoing my blog using Moveable Type. I don't think there would be much noticieable change to a reader since Moveable Type and Typepad are really pretty much the same, but I would have more flexibility and could install at my own isp with my own domain name without having to use a pointer as I do now. I think I would have a little more creative flexibilty built in and as far as I can see, the costs to me on a monthly basis would be about the same and might even save me a dollar or two.

I am interested in comments from anyone who now uses Moveable Type and does their own installing or programming, but who maybe like me, is self taught and therefore need to "keep it simple."  Also anyone who has made this switch, pros and cons?

If I do this, it will be in the upcoming week. I made a switch from Bravenet and their brave.blog software to Typepad already so I know it is a big job, however I think this would be easier as Typepad has an export feature.

I had planned the upcoming week to be a light one as far as blog entries because I've been called for Jury Duty.

A new company plans to unveil new high-tech tombstones with embedded flat screen monitors that would allow visitors to play memorial videos of the deceased. Joe Joachim, who says he wants to be the Walt Disney of the funeral business, plans to show the Vidstone this year at the annual funeral directors convention.

The solar-powered Vidstone will play a video of the person's life at the touch of a button. The tombstone is available with a choice of seven, 15 and 22-inch screens. It features a 5 to 8-minute slideshow accompanied by music and prose, allowing relatives to record their most precious memories of their loved one.
