For those who live in other states, the California Propositon system seems crazy. Well, it is our system and there are a bunch of Props on this year's ballot that deserve to go down to resounding defeat. One of them is Proposition 87. It is a recipe for disaster, more big bureaucracy and a huge gouging on oil taxes for what? Nothing.
Prop 87 gives a $4 billion oil tax to a new bureaucracy of 50 political appointees and not one word requires them to produce any results. 87 truly is a recipe for waste – not progress.
California newspapers say Prop 87 is not the road to cleaner, cheaper energy.

Prop 87 means higher gas prices, greater dependence on foreign oil and a new bureaucracy of 50 political appointees with no accountability to taxpayers. 87also reduces available revenues for schools & public safety.
We need alternative energy, but Prop 87 is not the way to get there.
Prop 87's proponents falsely claim in a new TV ad that their measure will decrease our dependence on foreign oil. The impact would actually be just the opposite.
“I agree with the Yes
campaign entirely about the evils of our dependence on foreign oil. The
problem is that, for the foreseeable future, Prop. 87 will INCREASE,
not decrease, that dependence.”
Professor Philip J. Romero
Former Chief Economist, California Office of Planning and Research
Economists agree that 87's $4 billion oil tax will decrease California
oil production, which will INCREASE our need to import foreign oil. And
there is absolutely NO requirement that Prop 87's bureaucracy make any
progress towards reducing petroleum use.
