It is arguably the most famous picture to come out of World War II and Joe Rosenthal took it:
The Pulitzer Committee in 1945 described the photo as "depicting one of the war's great moments," a "frozen flash of history."
Rosenthal, born Oct. 9, 1911, in Washington, D.C., was found dead at about 10:45 a.m. in his bed at his home in the Atria Tamalpais Creek assisted living center. [Read more ...]
My former husband served aboard the USS Iwo Jima LPH2 and the following picture was taken the day I took my girl scout troop on a field trip there (1970-71 timeframe). Yes, I'm the only one in the picture not in uniform. The picture was the first thing you saw as you came onboard. The old Iwo was decommissioned in 1993 and sold for scrap in 1995. She was made most famous as the ship that picked up the astronauts of the troubled Apollo 13 mission.
