This is a bit of a departure from our normal type of posting.
I am trying to find out more about the artist, Charles L. Reed.
I believe that he lived in the San Francisco Bay area.
I know he had a wife named Mabel.
I know that he was a skilled pen and ink artist
I know that he was good friends with my Grandfather, who died at 78 in 1965 and lived in Piedmont, CA before his death.
He may have been associated with Westinghouse Electric in his day job, but this is only a guess.
He drew this pen and ink drawing, which is signed Chas. L. Reed 1949, a gift to my Grandparents with an additonal note on the mat that says, "to our good friends, Bill and Ann, whose friendship is greatly appreciated. Charlie and Mabel Reed". (The white spot is caused by my flash reflecting off the glass and is not on the drawing)
I am very partial to this piece, which I inherited from my Mother in 2004. She got it after my grandfather died in 1965. I would love to know more about Mr. Reed and whether there are other works by him. The piece shows a sense of humor with a bit of a cartoonish flare. It also looks like it could have been done for some historical advertising piece. A few years ago I did find a reference to Charles L. Reed as being an artist known for his California scenes. When I did a more recent search, I could not find this earlier reference nor any others.
