I grew up close enough to Punxatawny, PA that one year, when I was about seven, my Dad took me to the Groundhog Day celebration. If my old memories are accurate, Phil did not see his shadow that day and Spring was supposed to be upon us. I think that was the same year it snowed on my birthday, which falls in the first week of May.
These days, I'm thankful for all the Groundhog Day hoopla as it reminds me that today is February 2nd. For some strange reason that probably has to do with forces beyond my understanding, my three closest lifetime friends all share this day as their birthday. Many a year, I've ended the day with the 11 pm newscast showcasing Phil and Friends and suddenly realized that I had neither called nor sent a birthday greeting. It used to send me out to the store the following morning for one of those "belated" "sorry I forgot" birthday cards that are so lame. But now, with the miracle of email, I manage to get my message out with a timestamp that may read 11:59, but still gets that important, 02 FEB as the date. This year, I'm doing slightly better, so
Happy Birthday
Michael, Melissa and Pete
