I finally got around to making an appointment to have an eye exam. It had been 3 years. I wear progressive lenses and I began to be aware of a problem when I had to push my glasses up to look through the very bottom and strongest part of the prescription in order to read my computer screen. The computer monitor should be at the middle distance vision level, not the reading level. So, off I went for my appointment at Lenscrafters. I am glad that the doctor writes in English, because I couldn't understand a word he said to me. He is Chinese. I'm trying to remember the last time I've seen an American doctor, for any specialty. My primary physician is from India, my podiatrist is Vietanmese, my orthopod is of mixed Asian extraction. None of them has English as their first language.
The exam was the most comprehensive I've ever had at an eye examination. They puffed the air, they shot bright light, they put me through a field of vision test, they put drops in my eyes and then took pictures of my retina and optic nerve. And when all was said and done, I waited about an hour for the lenses to be ground and I was out the door with new glasses and wow, what a difference. I had no idea just how blind I'd become in 3 years. This getting old business is for the birds when it comes to eyesight, that's for sure.
The only problem with this whole experience was the cost, which was HUGE, even with the generous discounts and coupons I had from Lenscrafters. Worse, during the hour I was waiting for them to make my new glasses, I strolled the mall, ended up at the Verizon kiosk and walked away with a new cell phone as well. It even matches the color of my new car - hey I am a girlie girl and those kinds of things are important. Aren't they? Its a pretty nifty phone, though. Camera, phone and mp3 player all in one. I can buy a separate insertable memory card for loading and storing music. It also uses Bluetooth technology and comes with a very nifty wireless ear thingy that works up
to 30 feet away from the phone and has a little touch pad that is part of the single earpiece for answering calls or the phone can be used as a speakerphone if you don't want to wear the earpiece. Since it is illegal now in California to be caught with a cell phone at your ear while driving, both features are nice to have. However, between the new glasses and the new phone, my bank account is in major meltdown and that new laptop I've had my eye on isn't going to get to come home with me as soon as I'd hoped it would. Maybe I should put up one of those tip jars like I've seen other bloggers do -- oh, please, please, pretty please help Sara get her new laptop. Does anyone ever really donate to them? I think I'd have better luck advertising for a sugar daddy, which is to say, no luck at all.
