I have been quiet for a few days thinking over the recent press conference by President Bush. What can I, as an individual, do in this great democratic country?
I am issuing a challenge to the entire "blogosphere."
The Problem: Social Security - Everyone knows it is broken and MUST BE FIXED. Not working on a solution is NOT AN OPTION. Being afraid of the electorate's negative reaction at the pollls is keeping all the Democrats and some of the Republicans from doing what MUST BE DONE.
THE CHALLENGE
Every person who reads this entry needs to call, mail or email both Senators from their state (each state has two) and then contact the Congressman or woman from your own District.
Tell them you want SOMETHING done. Tell them that only obstructing other's suggestions is nonproductive. Tell them your own ideas, if you have them. Tell them that nonaction is unacceptable and just saying "no" to every suggestion made by the opposing party is also unacceptable. The bottom line ...
TELL THEM TO GET THEIR BUTTS IN GEAR AND BACK TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE.
You don't have to agree with the President's proposals, but no proposal at all is NOT AN OPTION.
Please take the challenge and then pass this on to friends and family and post the challenge on your own BLOGS. We need to light a fire under those too scared to act.
Thank you.

PS: You might mention that the same holds true for judges too.

Republicans and Democrats do have the same virtues, they just have a different plan of action. Both will work, both will fail, both of them must work together. That's the only way our country works. Right now, we are out of balance.

Roger ... the subject is nonaction on a critical problem. The subject isn't the economy or the war in Iraq. And, dear Roger, you make my point, even though I don't think you meant to. "Both of them must work together," you say ... well that is the very problem I've issued the challenge about ... they are not working together. All Congress is doing right now is sticking its collective heads in the sand as you apparently wish to do as well. I have no dog in this hunt since I was born before 1950, but I have two children in their thirties about to enter their maximum earning years and I'd like to think there was something left for them. I have a granddaughter who is 15 and who already understands the value of investments. I guess it is beyond me how so many people got so badly educated about the idea that the government is a better money manager than you are yourself or that the private sector is.
So again, my challenge is to inform your Congressional representatives and Senators that you sent them there to work things out and that inaction is not an option. Of course, if like Roger, you believe that doing nothing will get the job done, well ... I guess I can be selfish and say good luck 'cause I'll get mine.

Well said. Getting American butts in gear at this point in time however can be as hard as finding a terrorist in a spider hole!

I think the plan is risky, and make claims of potential financial gains for private accounts that may not actually be realized. I already have private investment accounts (IRAs) , in which I have lost a considerable amount of money. Many of the people who visited Congressman Reichert's along with me had similar stories of severe financial losses.
I support a raise in the cap on social security taxes as a way to keep the system solvent. I do not support the Presidents Plan to privatize social security.
And keep in mind that "fending for yourself" isn't all that easy, as workers for United Airlines have found. After working for a lifetime in many cases, United employees have found that their coorporation is using their pensions as part of United's reorganization plan. Now that United has been able to cast off its pension plan responsibilies, I would expect other corporations to line up to do the same. So Social Security may be more important than you think.....
